eBook Review: The Freelance Writer’s Guide to Passive Income

Most freelance writers earn money by writing articles or working with clients. But those aren’t the only ways for wordsmiths to earn a living.

In her just-released eBook, The Freelance Writer’s Guide to Passive Income , Thursday Bram shows readers how to generate additional revenue streams through other more entrepreneurial writing projects: eBooks, niche websites, classes, newsletters, and other products (web-based and offline).

Bram describes the amount of work involved in each option, profiles a successful writer in each category, and examines potential pitfalls, too. There’s also a section on carving out time to complete these projects and how to market it.

These revenue streams are often lumped together under the category of “passive income,” but Bram will be the first to admit that they aren’t truly passive nor are they “get rich quick” schemes. There’s work involved in launching a successful eBook or a niche website. But, unlike client-based projects, there’s no income ceiling, because you aren't limited by the number of hours in a day and you can keep selling these projects again and again.

If you have that entrepreneurial spark and the desire to sell your own products, then you’ll find a treasure trove of information, much of it from people in the trenches selling these kinds of products themselves. Though Bram modestly suggests that her eBook isn’t suitable for people who’ve already explored passive income streams, I picked up several tips and tricks along the way (yes, even in the section about eBooks).

Much of the information about defining your ideal customer and researching your niche is also applicable to entrepreneurs and traditional freelancers, too.

My one (minor) beef is that the photos of the writers Bram profiles are small enough to fit on a postage stamp (or close to it). Sure, it’s a cheap trick to fill an eBook with photos or white space instead of content, but there’s so much readable and useful information packed into 78 pages that I wouldn’t have minded larger images.

Overall, though, The Freelance Writer’s Guide to Passive Income is a fast-paced read filled with practical tips and candid advice.
